In this lesson, students will explore the pivotal events, key figures, and landmark legislation that shaped the American Civil Rights movement from the era of Jim Crow Laws to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They will gain an understanding of the strategies employed by activists, such as nonviolent protest and legal challenges, to fight against racial segregation and discrimination, and how these efforts led to transformative changes in American society. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
