In this lesson, students will explore Japan's rapid transformation from a feudal society to a modern imperial power during the Meiji Restoration and its subsequent expansionist policies leading up to World War II. They will examine the complex interplay of nationalism, military modernization, and economic ambitions that drove Japan's aggressive foreign policy and led to significant conflicts in Asia, including the Sino-Japanese Wars and the establishment of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
