Australian Freedom Ride Lesson

Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine the causes and events of the 1965 Australian Freedom Bus Ride, exploring how a group of university students and First Nations activists drew national attention to racial inequality in rural New South Wales and Queensland. They will also investigate the tactics used by the Freedom Riders and evaluate how effective direct protest was in bringing about change for Indigenous Australians during this period. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
