In this lesson, students will examine the causes and course of the Spanish Civil War, tracing the political instability that divided Spain in the early 20th century and the foreign powers that chose sides in the conflict. They will also explore the military campaigns of both the Republican and Nationalist forces, including key battles at Madrid and Guadalajara, as well as the Ebro River, and assess how the balance of power shifted in favour of Franco’s forces by 1939. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
