In this lesson, students will examine the Catholic Church's response to the Protestant Reformation through the key events and decisions of the Council of Trent, exploring how it clarified doctrine, reformed the clergy, and standardised Catholic worship. They will also investigate how new religious orders, particularly the Jesuits, promoted Catholic education and missionary work, and consider how the Baroque artistic movement was used to reinforce the Church's authority and appeal to the emotions of believers. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
