In this lesson, students will examine the causes and events of the Inca Civil War, tracing how the succession dispute between Atahualpa and Huáscar tore apart one of the most powerful empires in pre-Columbian America. They will also explore how the war's devastating effects left the Inca state weakened and exposed, ultimately allowing Francisco Pizarro and the Spanish conquistadors to seize control of the empire in 1532. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, including reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
