In this lesson, students will examine the origins, training, duties, and decline of the Japanese samurai, exploring how the bushido code shaped every aspect of warrior life in feudal Japan. They will also investigate the social structure surrounding the samurai class, including the roles of the daimyo and shogun, and consider what the rise of ronin culture reveals about the limits of samurai loyalty. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, including reading, source analysis, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
