Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine the causes and course of the Australian gold rushes of the 1850s, with particular focus on the discovery of gold in New South Wales and Victoria and the immigration it triggered. They will also explore the social and political consequences of those rushes, including the Eureka Stockade rebellion and the eventual move towards a federal system of government. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
