In this lesson, students will examine the development of castle design from the early wooden motte and bailey structures of the Norman period through to the sophisticated stone fortifications of the high Middle Ages. They will also explore the methods that attacking armies used to overcome castle defences and consider how each new attacking technique pushed architects to produce more elaborate and effective designs in response. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, including reading, research, and watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
